The Epidemic of Indecision

The hardest lesson I had to learn about decision making was not wavering once I made the decision. There are no mistakes. Now, the hardest thing I have to learn about decisions is maintaining the enthusiasm that I had when I first made the decision. When the enthusiasm wanes the choice just seems to fade away like dust.

Another Brilliant blog Paul. I agree, this has been something I have been trying to do more of and also change they way I have been taught things. I never really thought about to much until you talked about it in your video about all the things we have been told to do, but do we really all have to do the same. Since Ed and I started learning about Homeschooling and what we need to learn it has really opened our eyes, heart and mind to what is important in life and what each of us an individuals need to learn with our passions and dreams in what we want to do in this great life. Thank you

For real. We have put the decisions in other peoples hands. When we make them ourselves, we exercise our freedom.

Thanks for the mention buddy. You are really spot on here. We are taught to be good little soldiers in school which probably does contribute to the indecision problem. I never was a good little soldier and was always in trouble for trying to do things my own way — an entrepreneur was born.

It all comes down to beliefs. (I just created a webinar on Adopting Effective Networking Beliefs for my members so its fresh in mind.) You can tell people to get decisive until you are blue in the face but all that indecisiveness we formed as children has formed beliefs about ourselves that much be changed. Awareness is a great first step to changing a belief and you are helping to create awareness through controversy – I like it.

I have always been a really good girl and taken direction…..however, I have also spent a lot of time openly challenging authority. I am a child of the sixties, after all. As a result, I homeschooled my kids for a number of years and have always raised them to be independent thinkers who do not blindly follow authority.

I do agree that for many people, there is the tendency to have the decisions made for you. That never results in anything good. Sooner or later people will rebel and not always in a healthy way. Thanks for addressing this important issue.

Hey Paul…I think you are on to something. We purposely put our kids into situations where they have to make decisions. We have found that they become empowered when they learn how to make decisions early on. We also give them more and more freedom to make decisions as they get older. By the time they are 13 or so…we are letting them make more and more of their own choices just so they can learn and practice these things. It seems ridiculous to me that we throw our children out into the world when they haven’t even learned to manage their lives in a “safe” environment. Thanks so much for the wisdom Paul!

You are so right, Paul. I’m going to take Bruce’s recommendations and encourage my kids to make more of their own decisions. I have made the transition, but I can see I’ve not fully supported my kids making their own decision.

We have taught them a lot about trusting their intuition. And I think that will help, but it’s not exactly the same thing.

I had to go back to your last post and think about what you said and not many get what you are saying there, but great point about no matter how much we beg, that does not bring us what we are looking for..

Ironically I was just meditating on this current topic, which is closely related to procrastination. People will say they are not afraid to take a certain step, but are still relunctant to make forward decision. Leaders make decisions, stick with them, and rarely change them.

Love the questions you asked of who makes all of those decisions for you in every part of life.

always remember – the purpose for making the decision in the first place…. really associate with what needs you had then – chances are (unless you’ve accomplished what you set out to do) the needs are still there, and you can use that “why” to stay motivated and enthusiastic.

yup.. this is why entrepreneurs don’t make very good employees. They thrive on making the next decision – not being told what someone else’s decision is. (Get back to work!)

You talk about “what we are taught” . . . and consequently what we are NOT taught.
As a long time teacher, I sincerely believe that my students need to understand process and not always be told what to do.

This is the old story of . . . giving someone a fish for one night’s dinner OR teaching them to fish, so they can always get their own dinner.

Too many people have learned “laziness” and prefer to be told what to do. Therefore they don’t practice making their own decisions.
